Many people think that securing a dog in an automobile is only for Chihuahua types, for little dogs you would carry in a purse and that might climb over onto your lap while you’re driving and distract you. The truth is car safety for large dogs is even more important, because the literal impact of a large, unsecured dog is far greater than that of a smaller one. Just do the math. There are a variety of techniques you can use, from crating — preferred by many people — to using a barrier, to rigging up a seatbelt-type device. Whatever you decide needs to be geared towards your particular dog and vehicle — but the fact that you’re aware is the first step to driving more safely.
